Chicago and Catholics throughout the US would be feeling a sense of overwhelming pride as Cardinal Robert Francise Prevost becomes the first American to head the Catholic Church.
When a world leader has to have courage to speak out against atrocities you know we’re in trouble.
Sorry to sound a little cynical when it comes to the Catholic Church and moral leadership.
Want Leo to be brave?
Send the Pontifical Swiss Guard to stand between the IDF and the people of Gaza and a battalion of nuns to open those border crossings and let the humanitarian aid pour in. I’m sure the Vatican bank (IOR) would be only too happy to help.
Brilliant suggestion Baz - “Send the Pontifical Swiss Guard….” when is SOMEONE - ANYONE - going to stop genocidal Netanyahu et al instead of supplying him with weapons/parts….Oh - I’m forgetting the Houthis - the ONLY ones at great cost to themselves and the beleaguered people of Yemen. Shame on the world.
Yes Judy you’d think we could have found even a modicum of justice by now (and a tad less hypocritical pontificating from the west )and it would have stopped this thing overnight.
Finally, the earliest pope on this list, Pope Leo I was pope from the year 440 to 461, during the dissolution of the Roman Empire.
Pope Leo I is best known for writing the celebrated Tome of Leo, which established the doctrine that Christ’s natures coexist and his Incarnation reveals that human nature is restored to perfect unity with divinity.
In one of the most interesting experiences of his life, Pope Leo I met Attila the Hun in 452, and successfully convinced the barbarian raider to turn back from his invasion of Italy. Attila was, apparently, so impressed with Pope Leo I that he willingly withdrew. After Rome was sacked, anyway, by the Vandals in 455, Pope Leo I assisted in rebuilding the city.
One of his most enduring teachings can be found in his Christmas Day sermon, “Christian, remember your dignity,” in which he articulated a fundamental dignity that is common to all Christians, whether saint or sinner—and the duty to live up to that dignity in goodness, no matter who we are.
A pope who was not interested in power for power’s sake, who resolved disputes, and who clarified the church’s teaching about the dual nature of Jesus Christ, Pope Leo I is truly one of the greats.
Very cool. I jumped to the conclusion that he was naming himself after his immediate predecessor by name, Leo XIII, who is honored as a crusader for workers’ rights (although he still opposed socialism) and for education and science, among other causes. It’s a good name. Lion!
That’s a question that has bothered me, and many others, since I was a kid. But it’s not at all uncommon. Most labor leaders today have to avoid endorsing socialism if they want public legitimacy.
What needs to come from Pope Leo XIV, if he is a true representative of Jesus Christ and servant of God, is actions, not words. The first thing he should do is personally command massive aid shipments to Gaza or go on a hunger strike!
Popes usually choose their names to indicate which previous pope they will model their own papacy on. Look up Pope Leo XIII. He was pope from 1878-1903, and spoke out against the working conditions created by capitalism.
He was also the first pope elected after the destruction of the Papal States and the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy, and had to lead the Church in a very different world from that of his predecessors.
Some Pope Leos also were not at all bashful about challenging temporal authority.
Prevost picked that name for a reason. We'll see what he means by that in good time, I'm sure.
Well then Ohio, he’s compelled to follow in the footsteps of, and uphold the humanity of the preceding XIII Leo’s that reigned prior. His courage is now before him.
Have I mentioned I am currently reading Greg Grandin's recently published America, América (A New History of the New World] - there are pointers back into the horrendous ethnic cleansing, theft and enslavement days of the early 16th-century onwards - of the Conquistadores and the "missionaries" as the battle for truth waged then - and there were those arguing that it was entirely an illegal conquest - so yes, Leo 14 has ancient precedents for speaking out against the Zionists - and he will WELL know the name Bartolomé de Las Casas...
Is this going to be a flashback to when Jews helped kill Christ then Christians, just like they got the Nazis to kill European Jews? Have there always been Zionists causing mayhem and slaughter, in order to gain wealth and power, while hiding behind other groups who do their dirty work for them, and have we now realised who is behind it all?
It’s been a long time since the pope spoke clearly and not in hints ,I will wait and hope your great logic becomes what the world is waiting for and if he doesn’t speak the truth and not be afraid of what America’s media controlled by villains and cooperate greed , my hope is your reasoning , what this world needs now more then ever in its history
I think you’ll find that Pope Francis was “the first American pope”. Pope Leo is certainly the first US pope - well, he is ‘US born’, but I’m not sure that qualifies him as an “American” under the current regime.
There were 3 Popes in 1978. Pope Paul VI was the last Pope Crowned and Enthoned in 1000 Years of Catholic Ritual and Tradition. The same kind of Ritual and Tradition the World saw with the Coronation of King Charles last year.
In 1976 I was a Canadian washing Dishes for a Time in Venice, California for $1/hour + food as I hitchhiked through some 45 States seeking the Spirit of '76.
I had free place to stay half a block from the Ocean, and I was invited to party more than I wanted or needed. It was a very good Year.
One morning, I woke up from a very Vivid and Powerful Dream of The Pope coming down from the Throne.
Two Years later, Pope John Paul I, the 1st Pope to call himself the 1st since Pope Landro in 913, succeeded Paul VI. Co-incidentally or by design, he came from Venice, Italy!
His 1st Papal Declaration was, 'The Pope is only a simple Priest. No Crown and Throne for the Pope.' That was a Bold Revolutionary Declaration by the upstart Pope for the Staid Old Guard Traditional Conservatives of the Vatican! His Successors couldn't demand the Throne back!
We'll never know what difference his Papacy would have done for the World because he was DEAD in a month. He was succeeded by Pope John Paul II.
I was hoping the new Pope would call himself Francis II, but Leo XIV is on the same Spiritual Path as Pope Francis.
I searched online for the text of his 1st homily/sermon in his 1st Mass as Pope for the Cardinals. He will follow in Pope Francis I footsteps, as Francis did his best to walk in the footsteps of the original Francis of Assisi in the Year of the Lord 1210.
Starting in 1977, I got into the position so that I could talk Face to Face, or pass a note to Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau without any intermediaries as he entered or left the House of Commons. I never met him in private. He quit being Prime Minister in 1984, just 2 weeks after Emissaries on his behalf questioned me at length on my attitude toward him? He moved from that House to what is known as The Cormier House in Montreal. I was invited to Lunch by The Pope's Apostolic Nuncio aka Ambassador to Canada the next Year.
In 1978 our personal interactions were Spiritually related in the sequence of the 3 Popes that year. His RCMP Security Detail, witness to the interactions, confirm the incidents in their Official RCMP reports.
Anyone who saw the picture Trump posted on his website of him as the Pope before the Conclave started, influenced the Cardinals. All of them would have talked about it the 1st Day of the Conclave
He influenced Canadian Unity behind the Carney Liberal Election win. The Liberals were 20 points behind the Conservatives in the Polls until Trump intervened in the Canadian Election with his tariffs. Trump influenced the outcome of the Australian election.
The Cardinals seeing that Trump as Pope caricature, made them realize only a real American Pope, could take on anti-Pope, anti-Christ Trump, so nothing would be lost in the translation.

Very sad.
The symbolism seems right. Pope Leo I was one of the greatest Popes.

Why would he have opposed socialism? That makes little sense if he was an advocate for workers' right!

Well said, George. Thank you.

I’m reposting for ppl who may want to see again & discuss.
I love your optimism
