Donald Trump’s style of politics and his policies are proving not only poisonous to Americans, but a poison countries around the world are refusing to swallow.
Thanks, George - excellent analysis of what we witnessed this evening and for placing together all the strands which led to this outcome - including the rejection of the Trumpian style of politics as being adopted by Peter Dutton and the dreadful Price woman in the NT. And importantly that you linked the Canadian Carney and the Australian Albanese wins. I am in touch already with a cousin in Canada about the win - I shall forward your essay to her and others in Canada who will find your essay a positive review of this week!
Australians did what the Americans did NOT. They voted for the lesser of two evils, even if Albanese was originally pro-Zionist. [He has since been more reserved and may even cut off support -- presumably.]
The "highly principled" geniuses in the US determined that since Biden was a staunch Zionist and Harris would not repudiate his support of genocide, they would NOT vote for her. This included progressives, Arab-Americans, Muslim-Americans, and many others, who either didn't vote or voted for "third party" candidates (effectively throwing their votes down the toilet).
I have been lambasted for stating that while I am firmly against the Gaza genocide, I would swallow my bile and vote for Harris, simply because Trump would prove so infinitely worse. Well, Trump won, things have gotten MUCH worse for the Palestinians, and the USA is now a dictatorship.
Bottom line: To the Australians: heartiest and sincerest congratulations. To those "highly principled" people in the US who "could not in good conscience vote for someone who enabled genocide" a hearty and sincere fuck-you.
Great comment Lenny, however, I do think you are wrong to describe Albanese as a pro- zionist. I think it's fairer to suggest he's a politician who allowed political pragmatism to muddy and distort his moral conscience. He has always been pro-palestinian, but he's put power, office and political survival before humanity - and that's a serious failing.
You have followed Albanese far more than I have, George, and you are doubtless correct in your appraisal. However, the "big picture" is that despite the aforementioned "serious failing" -- and I agree completely with your choice of words! -- if all the people who share our viewpoint vis-a-vis Zionist genocide had not voted or voted for a minor party candidate, the situation would have been far worse. That is what happened in the USA.
I thought for quite some time that Dutton playing Zionist shill promoting genocide by Israel might piss off some Australians. With Jacinta Price and others doing the same thing, I suspect a lot of Australians were simply horrified to see the Liberals as genocidalists, promoting colonial ethnic cleansing, and if he had won, in their name. Delighted he also lost his seat and I hope any Liberal who has been playing Zioraeli mouthpiece on this genocide has the same experience.
Great piece. It's great to see the selfish and unserious being shown the door like this. Disappointed in the Greens showing, but the Indies did well to hold their own. I hope Double-A will start cracking the whip on the tax dodgers and getting serious about our medical situation - nurses need a fairer shake and the bulk-billing situation is out of control - and better education around mining and general investment regulation. "They expect a return on their investment" is a sentence I don't ever want to suffer through again, for example.
On the down side: what the hell just happened to the Blues? 10 goals? Jesus...
The Greens have become fanatics about the Climate Change propaganda and the Green Dream, something vets use to kill animals, is killing our country and our economy. Yes they took a stand on Palestine but they are not standing up for the Australian people. They need to downgrade from Greenie lunatics to Greenie pragmatists.
I appreciate you replying to this. I've heard the criticisms and they are valid, for sure. Less politicking and a focus on genuine community building and coherent positions on taxation, mining and energy transitions will be more than welcome.
Palestine was at the forefront of my thinking this time around, but I am slightly wiser about the bigger picture (including not waiting for the home stretch to get my facts right, in future) thanks to the great and gutsy Aussies that have set up around the online traps.
I am old enough to remember Greens Lite when they made a lot of sense a lot of the time albeit not on nuclear power which was always lunatic territory. But they have become increasingly fanatical and obsessed with theories and policies which are not thought through. Climate change being the worst of them.
Climate Change is a universal Hamas - whatever happens it is the fault of Climate Change regardless. I am surprised Hamas has not been blamed for that as the Israelis wreak havoc as the worst ecological and environmental vandals, over 76 years, in the modern age.
I think most reasonable people are more than happy to support efforts to leave a lighter footprint on the world, but not at the cost of their lives, homes, economic security or sanity. We have worse bushfires because Greens have prevented necessary litter cleaning in forests and we are despoiling nature with acres of hideous solar panels and wind farms, neither of which alone or in combination can as yet provide base load power. And both of which are toxic to produce and result in highly toxic waste.
As to Palestine, I doubt we will never know how many Australians detested Dutton because he was a genocidal shill. He was never a good choice for leader so perhaps it did not take much for more people to decide that they did not want him and his mob in Government.
Thanks Darren - well where i voted the libs conceded the booth and had abandoned handing out how to vote cards by 1.00pm. I somehow suspect that was indicative across many booths.

Beautifully said Roslyn
Good call

Rejecting Trumpism?
Not even close.
Trump is the symptom of a far larger problem that's been around for a lot longer.
Yeah, but the article isn't titled 'A History of Rich Peoples Bullshit', so just call it what it's called at the moment, yes?
Non sequitur.
Directly addressing your comment?
I don't think that means, what you think that means...
