Since Biden’s 2020 election victory, there has been a growing concern among observers - domestic and international, about the perception that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has been politicised.
Couple that with what many claim are the relentless indictments by State and Federal District Attorneys against former President Donald Trump, and the situation is rapidly making the U.S. a focus of global attention and, in some quarters, international derision.
Banana Republics are made of this stuff, and the US has forged its own US-style tyranny of rule.
The core of contention lies with Trump, a polarising figure, seemingly being pursued not on legal grounds but on political ones.
The overtly motivated political attacks on the former President, have now more than ever, cloaked the US in a blancmange of global ridicule.
What it once said it stood for and fought against, has flipped to become the mirror image of a tyrannical dictatorship.
The Biden Government has done well to elevate itself and the US to a status of international humiliation and ridicule.
The ongoing charges against Trump are not only bizarrely excessive and seemingly "fabricated" but aimed to prevent a Lazarus-like political return.
Biblically, this is the return of ‘the favoured son’- the political reawakening of a larger-than-life enigma in US politics and the thought of Trump returning to the Oval Office frightens many.
The narrative to ‘Get Trump’ has been further accentuated by a Georgia judge who yesterday imposed a gag order on Trump and three of his associates over racketeering allegations to defraud the U.S. government of an election victory.
The essence of any justice system lies in its impartiality.
While every individual, no matter who they are, should face legal consequences for proven misconduct, the litany of cases against Trump transcends this very tenet.
The relentless challenges against Trump, suggest its less about justice and more about sidelining him from running. Trump's political reach remains extensive, even post-presidency.
His influence over the GOP and his vast support base are causing unease within Democratic ranks.
The belief amongst Democrats is that these legal challenges are a double win - it portrays him as corrupt while ensuring he doesn’t regain political office.
What it also demonstrates is a Democratic Party fearful of Trump's return and willing to erode faith in the justice system to prevent it.
From the viewpoint of Trump supporters, there's an unyielding and unending pursuit to keep him out of office.
Allegations of wrongdoing should be investigated if they’re warranted, but there comes a point when the crazed pursuit of an individual needs to be called out for what it is – unhinged madness.
The sheer number and nature of charges raises eyebrows, and the persistent nature of these cases seems less about seeking justice and more about ending Trump’s return as President.
And yesterday, Fulton County court Judge Scott McAfee reinforced the attempted political assassination of Trump.
McAfee set bond and release conditions for Trump and some of his 18 co-defendants in the Georgia case alleging they unlawfully interfered in the 2020 election.
Trump bail was set at $200,000, with four other co-defendants reaching bond agreements on Aug. 15.
His lawyer’s John Eastman and Kenneth Chesebro's bonds were set at $100,000, Bail Bondsman Scott Hall’s was set at $10,000, while another lawyer for Trump, Ray Smith III's was $50,000.
And the madness is further exhibited in the bail conditions restricting who the men can contact and what they can say.
"The defendant shall not communicate in any way, directly or indirectly, about the facts of this case" with known co-defendants or with known witnesses, the documents for all five men state. However, they may use attorneys as conduits to contact co-defendants or witnesses, the orders state.
The order bars them from committing any acts to intimidate known co-defendants or known witnesses. They also must not "otherwise obstruct the administration of justice," the orders state.
The casualty in all this political maelstrom is the public's trust in institutions.
If the legal system, historically revered as a pillar of impartiality, are perceived to be wielded as a political tool, the consequences for democratic values become dire.
The erosion of trust could further polarise an already divided nation, making civil discourse and collaboration even more challenging.
As the 2024 elections loom, there's a fear the trust deficit could negatively impact on the electoral process. And if that happens, the US could descend into an even darker place it hasn’t experience in over 150 years.
If significant portions of the electorate view the system as rigged or biased, the foundations of democracy are at risk.
The US stand at an intersection with its reputation and the trust in its institutions hanging in the balance.
It's crucial the legal processes must run their course and remain devoid of political influence, preserving the sanctity of the justice system.
As the world watches, the U.S. has to navigate these troubled times ensuring its democratic values remain intact and that the pursuit of justice is genuine, not just a mask for political manoeuvring.
Thank you Gilgamech - the entire western world is rapidly deteriorating abd becoming a laughing stock, it just so happens the US is getting there quicker than others.
Thoroughly agree with you George. I woke up this morning with the realisation that the US legal system is in danger of becoming the laughingstock of the world.
